Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and today we’d like to introduce one of our smallest patients – Mabel. Weighing just 1.4kg, this tiny pup is full of energy, personality, and excitement for life.

Little Mabel! 🩷
Three months ago, Mabel suffered an awkward landing at home and suddenly became lame on her right front leg. After being assessed by Emma, one of our orthopaedic surgeons at Bridge Referralsl, radiographs confirmed a displaced fracture of both the radius and ulna in her right forelimb.

Due to Mabel’s incredibly small size, careful surgical planning was essential. The fracture was successfully reduced and stabilised using our smallest locking plate system — 1.5mm plates and screws — allowing precise fixation suited to such a tiny patient.
Thankfully, Mabel’s recovery from anaesthesia was smooth and uneventful, and she was able to return home to her owners the very next day.

Over the following 12 weeks, Mabel gradually increased her lead exercise under close monitoring from our team. Follow-up radiographs were performed at both 6 and 12 weeks post-operatively to assess fracture healing, and we are delighted to say that Mabel has now received the all-clear to return to normal exercise.

Seeing patients like Mabel recover so well is incredibly rewarding for our team. From a very delicate fracture repair to a full return to her playful self, she has been an absolute superstar throughout her recovery journey.
We hope Mabel enjoys a summer full of fun, freedom, and adventures.
