Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO) surgery is a very popular and effective procedure for treating cranial cruciate ligament injuries in dogs. At Bridge Referrals, it plays a significant role in helping pets regain mobility and comfort.

Sula’s story

Sula presented to our orthopaedic department with a history of right hind limb lameness. Examination and radiographs confirmed that Sula had completely ruptured her right cranial cruciate ligament, this is a very common injury in dogs. TPLO was performed and this involved cutting the top of the tibia, rotating the bone to reduce the tibial plateau angle and securing the two parts of the tibia with a plate and screws.

Post-operative radiographs

Sula stayed with us overnight for pain relief and fluids and to ensure a smooth recovery from her anaesthetic. She was discharged back to her owner the following day with oral pain relief.

Sula has done extremely well post surgery and following her twelve week recovery and rehabilitation programme, we are pleased to report that she is back out there running about with her friends again!

We offer a fixed fee for our TPLO surgeries and included in this is a physiotherapy session, 3 weeks of medication and all post-operative consultations, we also cover any complications for one year following surgery. Although post-operative radiographs are not required in patients that are doing well, if these are necessary they are performed at no additional cost.

Benefits of TPLO Surgery:

  • Improves joint stability
  • Reduces the progression of osteoarthritis
  • Reduces the incidence of late meniscal tear
  • Most dogs return to normal or near-normal activity levels

TPLO is one of the most effective surgical treatments for cranial cruciate ligament rupture in dogs, with a very low complication rate. In our hands this procedure has an excellent success rate, with most dogs returning to full mobility and an active lifestyle after recovery.
