Handsome Rowdy!
Meet the lovely Rowdy!
Rowdy was referred to our ophthalmology department after his owner noticed a subtle but concerning change in the appearance of his left eye. Although Rowdy remained bright and comfortable at home, any change involving the eye can be significant, so his owner sought further investigation with our ophthalmology team.
One of our Ophthalmologists, Olivia, carried out a comprehensive ophthalmic examination to assess the health of Rowdy’s eye. During the examination, she identified an intraocular mass arising from the back of the iris. Intraocular masses can vary in severity and treatment options, so obtaining a clear understanding of the size and location of the mass was essential in planning the next steps for Rowdy’s care.

To investigate further, an ocular ultrasound was performed. This advanced imaging technique allowed the team to assess the full extent of the mass within the eye and determine whether surrounding structures were affected. Fortunately, the ultrasound confirmed that the mass was still small and localised, meaning surgery could be performed to remove it while preserving the eye itself.
Sarah Harrison performed Rowdy’s delicate surgery using our operating microscope and specialised microsurgical equipment. Procedures involving the eye require an extremely high level of precision, and the use of advanced surgical techniques helped give Rowdy the best possible outcome.
After a period of post-operative monitoring and care to ensure smooth recovery, we are delighted to say that he recovered very well and has been doing brilliantly since returning home to his family.

Cases like Rowdy’s highlight the importance of early investigation when changes are noticed in a pet’s eyes. Prompt assessment can make a significant difference and, in Rowdy’s case, allowed treatment to be performed early enough to save his eye.
