Becky Snelson – Soft Tissue Surgical Intern at Bridge Referrals

Becky is very excited to join Team Bridge in their new position as a Soft Tissue Surgical Intern. She grew up in Cheshire and graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2019 and began her career in a mixed practice in the Scottish Borders. It was there that Becky’s love for surgery began. To further develop her skills, she moved to a busy small animal practice in Newcastle to gain experience in a hospital setting.

After the challenges of the pandemic Becky fancied an adventure, leading her to pursue a 10-month stint in New Zealand. To facilitate this, she took on locum work in the North East before heading abroad. Whilst in New Zealand, Becky worked as a locum, small animal vet, but also had the opportunity to see the occasional large animal case — a good excuse to hit the road in the practice’s pick-up truck! Following 7 months of work Becky bought an old camper van which also allowed her to explore both islands and make the most of the great outdoors through heliskiing, sailing and alpine mountaineering.

Before coming back to the UK Becky decided to pursue a career in specialised referral practice. Over the past year, she has served as a rotating intern at the University of Edinburgh’s Dick Vet School, where her responsibilities primarily involved out-of-hours emergency work in their busy intensive care unit and overnight hospital patient management of small animals and exotic patients.

Additionally, Becky had the opportunity to help with student teaching and rotate through all of the hospital’s specialist departments providing a great multidisciplinary foundation in referral practice. During this time, Becky completed the RECOVER basic and advanced life support courses, as well as Fear Free training to improve both patient and client experience. Becky has submitted an application to become an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education academy to further her teaching skill set.

Having always worked for practices that provide their own out of hours, Becky particularly enjoys emergency surgical cases and in particular thoracic surgery. Becky is thrilled to have the opportunity to learn from the experienced team here at Bridge Referrals and be a part of this exciting new stage of development.

Welcome aboard, Becky!
