The handsome Cruz
Cruz presented to our orthopaedic department after becoming acutely non–weight-bearing lame on his right forelimb. A CT scan of the forelimb confirmed a lateral condylar fracture, along with a non-displaced medial condylar fissure (a break on the outer part of the elbow joint—and a small crack on the inner side).

Image on the left shows the fissure line through the medial epicondyle (red arrows) and the extensive epicondylar remodelling (blue arrows). Image on the right is a 3D CT reconstruction of the lateral condylar fracture.
Surgical repair involved making an incision over the outer aspect of the elbow to access the fracture. The fracture was then carefully reduced and stabilised using a large transcondylar screw together with a lateral anti-rotation plate to ensure optimal alignment and stability during healing.

Post-op X-rays
After surgery, Cruz stayed with us for careful monitoring and plenty of cuddles from the team. He went home with pain relief and a clear recovery plan. For the first few weeks, he needed to rest as much as possible to protect the repair.
Cruz recently returned for his post-operative radiographs, which showed the fracture is healing well. He now requires another six weeks of gradually increasing exercise before he can start going off the lead again and getting back to doing what he loves most—running.

We’re so proud of Cruz and his progress so far. He has been such a brave boy, and we can’t wait to see him back to full speed soon!
